Fall Anime Season 2011 First Impressions:

I forgot to do a Summer ending post and ive been too busy to do this earlier but i’ve finally gotten around to watching 7 new shows out of the 20+ this season.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai episode 1: 8/10

Even having a similar fanbase as Oreimo AND already having two adorable nendoroids, I still had doubts for this series. Luckily, all of those doubts were shattered. The pacing was great, the animation was clean, and most importantly, I laughed. This was a great first episode to what looks to be a great show! My only concern, however, is how strikingly similar the character faces are to Spring’s Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. (Denpa: http://bit.ly/n7TaIf Boku Wa: http://bit.ly/oJTlxv)

Other than that, the only other concern was that it may go in a very…”loli” route if you know what I mean (seriously, just watch the OP).

Ben-to: 5/10

Ben-to is a weird comedy. Like, really weird. It’s basically about people who fight to the death over half-price lunches. It’s a bit ridiculous, but it strangely works. Good voice acting and hilarious situations makes this a good comedy for anyone not expecting the norm. My biggest complaint is the animation. I don’t know if it was just me, but the animation BUGGED ME. A LOT. It just didn’t fit the mood of the show which is comedic. It looked more like an angst-fest. I know this studio is not very well respected, but i’m not a fan.

Overall, Ben-to was enjoyable to a certain extent! Just don’t expect to be “P.A. worked.”

Guilty Crown: 7/10

As much as I want to give this a 10, I can’t. Besides Mirai Nikki, this was my most anticipated show of the season. The PV literally made my jaw drop. I was blown away by the animation and music, the story sounded more or less interesting, and the staff put me in VERY high hopes. After watching the first episode, I felt like I just watched an extended version of the PV. Literally. What will happen next episode is unknown to me, but either way, I’m a bit sad by this one. The pacing, was honestly horrible. Jumping from a self-hating scene to a gang scene to a “yew better fight or imma keel you” scene to a spectacular looking final scene, it just seemed off.

The first episode, in production terms, was fabulous. I couldn’t have wanted more. The writing, needed help. I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece, but at least something better than this. Hopefully the next episode will bring back the excitement.

Kimi to Boku. : 4/10

I’ve been skeptical of J.C. Staff ever since the bomb that was Yumeki Merry. They have somewhat started to redeem themselves, but this was just bad. I was bored the entire episode. Sure, I chuckled a little bit at the “middle bed” bit, but other than that it was pretty dull. The animation was pathetic. It is obvious they are putting their attention on Shana III. This show, even saying upfront it is not a yaoi, it still had a load of b/l undertones. And i am not a yaoi fan.

All in all Kimi to Boku better pick up or most will end up dropping it. It had a nice OP and was nice for a relax show, but it wasn’t breaking any new grounds of any sorts.

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon: 6/10

Reading the description for Horizon, I was thinking WOW. This story will rock. Watching the PV, i thought HOLY CRAP. The animation looks great. After the first episode, we have no story yet. We DID however, have an AWESOME chase scene (aka the whole episode). The only big complaint was this: http://bit.ly/ojNgEq . Thats all it is. Big boobs. Big hair. Cliches. That brought down my rating seeing as how 90% of the characters are like this.

Horizon has potential. If that’s all it will ever have, thats ok. It was a nice first episode with pluses and minuses. All i can say is, let’s hope this is a two-coer.

Last Exile-Fam, the Silver Wing: 7.5/10

I watched the first few episodes of Last Exile and I liked the series, but never got around to finish it. I was excited when LE was announced for this season! So I watch the first episode, and huh. It looked great, it sounded great, but it felt wrong. I’m not sure what to really think. We were kinda thrown into the action without any context (i’m sure die-hard LE fans knew lol) and boom first episode over. The OP was catchy and the visuals were nice. The voice acting sounds great! I’m also enjoying Fam as a character (Ohana anyone?). I hope we either get a really good story that will make sense later or a moe comedy with great action.

Fam the silver wing looked and sounded great, but it didn’t feel right.

Mirai Nikki: 10/10

I know what you’re thinking. How could everything else get a mediocre grade and this get a perfect score? As a HUGE Mirai Nikki fan, this was a dream come true. The scenes were almost exact to matching the manga. The voices were spot on. The visuals had that fluff yet something darker remains feel. The story has not been changed. It was: flat. out. perfect.

I have no complaints for this first episode. I am super excited for the rest of the series.

Final Thoughts:

This season is not the best of this year. It has many sequels that I can’t watch without seeing the first. Even if some fans are cheering for Shana III, Ika Musume 2, and others, I can’t watch them. There are, however, some great shows that I will be excited to watch.

For Sures: Mirai Nikki, Guilty Crown, Boku Wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

Might Pick Up Again: Kimi to Boku, Last Exile, Horizon

Dropped: Ben-to

I think i’m happy with this decision. Why watch (and waste time) on shows I don’t like? Its like eating your least favorite candy in hopes of it finally tasting good.

The following section is a list of anime from this season I will watch later. Most likely from not seeing the first series or not having played the game yet.

Watch Later: Ika Musume 2, Shana III, Persona 4 the Animation, Fate/Zero,

This season is probably my least favorite of the year. That doesn’t mean that it won’t be good! I hope to be impressed by this year’s Fall Anime Season.

So tell me readers, what are you watching and what do you think of the season so far?
